The Unacceptable Cruel Sports Bullying Of Rachael Gunn

The interesting thing about Rachael Gunn’s story is that it wasn’t much of a story to begin with, but the media turned it into one. The audience, unfortunately, wasn’t discerning enough to realize that it was simply about an athlete who didn’t succeed or probably had something like the yips. This new notion of needing to bring someone down led to a pile-on, as the media couldn’t sell anything else. This is the kind of rubbish story the audience wants to consume, creating a supply and demand cycle in the media. It started as a pathetic news story, and then other hack media outlets decided to sell it. The audience, already tainted by the same brush, lapped up this cruel story. But the question remains – why does this story continue, and how far will the sports bullying on this athlete go? Will it push her too far, just so the media can get another story to sell? The media is happy, and the audience is the cause.

In recent weeks, the world has witnessed a disturbing wave of online sports bullying directed at Rachael Gunn, also known as B-Girl Raygun, following her performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Gunn, a 36-year-old Sydney university professor, competed in the breaking competition, a sport making its Olympic debut. Despite her efforts and the transparent qualification process she underwent, Gunn faced harsh criticism and ridicule, including an anonymous online petition filled with falsehoods.

If you are one of the people who signed the petition, your standpoint is noted but also naive. Just because everyone shouts doesn’t make it correct. It just means you screamed, sometimes for no apparent reason.

The media, sports organizations, celebrities, sportspeople, and any other outlets involved in this bullying should not have the right to talk about morals and moral standards. If they cause damage because it is easy to make fun of someone, that is not quality; it is pack hunting. Eventually, the other end of this issue is not nice, and it is on all of you. Will you then take responsibility of what you did wrong in all areas.

When Did Bullying Become Acceptable?

The question we must ask ourselves is – When did bullying become acceptable? The answer is simple—it never has been, and it never should be. Yet, the anonymity of the internet has emboldened individuals to engage in behavior that they would likely never exhibit in person. This type of bullying is not just a harmless joke; it is a serious issue that can have devastating consequences. It now can achieve full world bullying standards.

The Impact of Bullying

Bullying, whether online or offline, can lead to severe emotional and psychological distress. Victims over time have different things they experience. It often may come as anxiety, depression, and a sense of isolation. The case of Rachael Gunn is a stark reminder of the potential consequences of unchecked bullying. No athlete, or any individual for that matter, should have to endure such treatment. The Sports Bullying World is a worldwide enterprise.
